MILITARY PERMIT TRAVEL STAMPS
The Allied Military Government (later known as the Allied High commission) required written permission in order to cross frontiers to and from Germany. These stamps were used to pay special taxes on entry and exit permits to the U.S., British and French Zones of Germany and Austria. Several offices were established in Europe to issue the travel permits. The first stamps were issued in dollar denominations in 1947. Beginning in late 1948, the stamps were issued in German Mark denominations.
